Google Mobile Search PPC – The Process

November 1st, 2011

Google Mobile PPCMobile search differs from computer-based search. It differs by search environment, user interface, user thought process, user interaction and some other factors. On a PC, potential leads go through the various stages of the purchase funnel and so the conversion process is longer. On mobile devices, conversions tend to be a bit more quicker because people tend to buy more impulsively then than at a PC where they can ponder about their actions.

Businesses have yet to come to terms with their PC-mobile marketing campaigns. For e.g. Home Depot has an excellent website, but does not have a good mobile experience. BestBuy on the other hand has a mobile experience that is aimed at conversions.

Yahoo’s Strategy – 6 Reasons why it blows

October 4th, 2011

Yahoo Business StrategyYahoo has been in the limelight recently when its former CEO, Carol Bartz was fired by phone by Yahoo!’s Chairman of the Board. As recently as yesterday, it was in the news for it’s media sharing arrangement with ABC.

When Yahoo brought Bartz in, the industry was optimistic about her prospects of effecting a turnaround in Yahoo’s fortunes. Nothing happened. In any case, here are my thoughts on what’s wrong with Yahoo!: » Read more: Yahoo’s Strategy – 6 Reasons why it blows

October 3rd, 2011

Google AdWords calculates a ‘Quality Score’ for each of your keywords. Quality scores range from 1 to 10. Google looks at a variety of factors to measure how relevant your keyword is to your ad text and to a user’s search query. Subdomains vs. Subfolders – The Fix

September 20th, 2011

The subdomains vs subfolders debate is a historical one. Matt Cutts states that this argument usually tends to be over nothing. Rand Fishkin recommends an evaluation of one’s website in all thoroughness before setting on a strategy.

To be clear, a subdomain is usually a url like this: babyproducts.amazon.com, while a subdirectory or a folder is a url like this: amazon.com/babyproducts/. No ambiguity here about definition. From a branding standpoint, one is a brand latch-on and attempts to co-brand itself while differentiating itself by product. The other nestles itself comfortably under the brand’s influence. Technically, they both perform the same function.

100 Must-have Negative Keywords for your PPC campaigns

September 15th, 2011

negative ppc keywordsEvery digital advertiser should use negative keywords in their PPC campaigns. Negative keywords are words and phrases that you do not want searchers to associate with your products and services. In other words, negative keywords are like irrelevant search term inhibitors.

By adding negative keywords to your PPC campaigns, your ads will not be served if those words are part of a search query. This has a direct benefit of saving money on wasted clicks and also improves the click-through rate (CTR) of your ads, which in turn helps improve your ad quality scores in Google. » Read more: 100 Must-have Negative Keywords for your PPC campaigns

The Google-Zagat Deal – Some Thoughts…

September 10th, 2011

google Zagat acquisitionGoogle’s acquisition last week of Zagat, the iconic restaurant rating and review company, for a reported $125 million, was a great deal for founders Tim and Nina Zagat. Even better, it was a purchase of prestige for Google who managed to get a rather venerable food-review brand into their stable.
