How to create a Social Media Strategy

June 3rd, 2011

Social Media StrategyThe question I’ll get asked by folks in my networks and some of my clients is: why write on social media?

My thoughts on social media is well known. I’ve always thought of social media as a promotional tool for certain products only.  Having spent years building up digital marketing systems for B2B and B2C firms, this seemed like a excellent project to address. The opportunity here is to approach social media in a strategic manner similar to how one would approach a PR initiative through traditional marketing channels. » Read more: How to create a Social Media Strategy

The Bronx Zoo Snake & the Art of Marketing

May 11th, 2011

Bronx Zoo SnakeThe story goes like this. A cobra vanishes from its enclosure in the Bronx Zoo. Pandemonium ensues in the zoo whereby it’s assumed that the reptile is up and about in NYC. Then, after a couple of days, they find her in a corner under some leaves close to where she originally vanished.

The story was serious and yet funny enough to be carried by the New York Times. The 20-inch venomous snake became an overnight media sensation.

Then someone got clever. Two days later, a Twitter account  @bronxzooscobra was created followed by some bloody amusing tweets (supposedly by the snake about her adventures in NYC).

The results:  500K followers today. So, how this this Twitter campaign play out? Here’s how…

The reasons for MySpace’s decline

November 22nd, 2010

MySpace Traffic numbersNews Corp, the company run by Rupert Murdoch, made one of its biggest internet purchases in 2005 when it bought Intermix Media, owner of MySpace.com, the fifth most-viewed internet domain then, in the US for $580m.

At the time, Murdoch’s intentions were clear about the site being a revenue generator for News Corp’s media sites by way of traffic monetization through advertising revenue. News Corp set up a new internet media unit and media analysts emphatic that the migration of advertising revenue from print to online meant that media companies had to invest in online assets, agreed that buying MySpace made sense.

Unfortunately, they did not tell News Corp how to run their costly online asset… » Read more: The reasons for MySpace’s decline

November 21st, 2010

Straight no Chaser - An A Capella band that uses social media wellAudacious.

That’s the word to describe the Straight No Chaser act.

Seeing them perform last evening, was quite an extraordinary experience. Their renditions of Oasis’s Wonderwall and Coldplay’s Fix You, were more than satisfying and their Lady Gaga, Christmas and Saturday morning cartoon medleys coupled with their Staying Alive-Superstition and Billy Jean-Poison cross overs had the house begging for more.

But, what really impressed me was the marketing savvy of these talented gentlemen. Without being overly promotional, they deftly dropped tips and suggestions on how the audience could help promote the group through their social media channels.

And, I learned some social media marketing lessons, 5 of them in fact, which I will share  with you. » Read more: 5 Social Media Marketing lessons from Straight No Chaser

Facebook & Twitter – the difference

April 14th, 2010

Twitter was created to allow folks to collaborate more closely than usual. Like most new IM technology, it was supposed to break down barriers. So far, it’s done a reasonably good job.

In October 2009,  Twitter attracted 58m web visitors, according to comScore. Recently its growth appears to have slowed down in the United States, but the service is still expanding in countries such as Japan and Germany. » Read more: Facebook & Twitter – the difference

Trust Agents – A Review of Brogan’s latest book

January 23rd, 2010

Chris Brogan (who’s probably seen or will see this post as a result of Google Alerts telling him) came out with a new book called Trust Agents: Using the Web to Build Influence, Improve Reputation, and Earn Trust. He co-wrote this with Julien Smith.

Naturally, Seth Godin who loves online buzzwords must’ve gotten real excited with the title itself and given it a “two thumbs up” on that basis. In any case, here are my thoughts on this book… » Read more: Trust Agents – A Review of Brogan’s latest book

January 5th, 2010

getting people to like your facebook pageThis was a neat article I came across on small business trends that I’ve republished in its entirety. Enjoy!

With its new tagging ability, Facebook has made its site a whole lot more appealing for small business owners.
